Roads in Finland are generally of a very good standard, with surfaces maintained to a high standard. Weight restrictions apply on some roads in different seasons, so this should be checked beforehand. Headlights should remain on at all times, sounding the horn, whilst not illegal, is not the done thing and studded/snow tires are mandatory in winter months – these can be hired easily. Public transport throughout Finland is generally regarded as excellent, with comprehensive bus and coach services linking nearly every town and city in the country with an efficient and reasonably priced service. Bus, tramway and metro services are well linked in Helsinki and offer efficient city travel with the minimum of fuss. Helsinki also has comprehensive links to offshore islands. The Finnish rail system is incredibly modern and most planned services have been implemented, including the large-scale use of the Pendolino’ fast train, which travels at speeds up to 130 miles and hour plus. Reduced rate fares can be obtained on all routes and services are efficient and reliable, as well as incredibly safe and comfortable. All in all, transport in the country is of a fantastic quality.Finnair offer countless internal flight services to any of the 22 domestic airports scattered through the country, along with the airlines Blue 1 and Golden Air. Certain discounts are available. There are many routes and services available through the rivers, lakes and waterways of the country, with car ferries and cruises offered on a regular basis.
